Critics of Chaucer’s work prove that, apart from sexual manipulation, “The Tale of the Wife of Bath” is also a tale of a woman’s social freedom synonymous to achieving economic freedom. In particular, Mary Carruthers’ analysis, entitled, The Wife of Bath and the Painting of the Lions, critics that the main character of the tale is portrayed as a dominant and manipulative woman simply because she has the economic advantage that her fellow wives/women did not have.
