“Cabin 33” is part of a collection of short stories by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, entitled The Saint-Germain Chronicles. These chronicles follow the adventures of the vampire, Saint-Germain. This story shows some common themes with other vampire literature, as well as themes that are less common.
In terms of characterization, Saint-Germain is a gentle vampire. He goes as far as vanquishing a fellow vampire to save the life of a human being. He can feed only on the blood of those he loves, and thus searches for someobody who will love him as he is. In “Cabin 33” he is the fighter for human life, and he never harms anybody, except of course the vampire causing the trouble.
A common vampire theme here is anemia. The Harper family’s daughter, Emily, is not well and suffers from this condition. Of course Saint-Germain suspects this and in a Van Helsing-like quest he searches and exposes the perpetrator.
A further popular theme in vampire fiction is the quest for love. The vampire realizes his plight but yet never gives up the search for love. This is a difficult theme to pin down in other vampire fiction …
