… In Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights, the author tells a complex story about how unrequited love that never grows, never develops and never changes can disrupt lives. The author communicates this on many levels and many ways, and often uses the natural world to help her tell her story.
The reader’s first clue is in the name of the novel. “Wuthering” is a reference to weather. The weather in the locale of the story is often stormy, and reflects how some of the interpersonal relationships will make trouble for people in the story. The reference to “heights” might suggest that Heathcliffe and Cathy have put each other on pedestals of a kind. Since they never establish a real relationship, they do not have to look at each other honestly. They don’t have to grow and change with each other. However, someone put at a great height is more exposed to the weather, or in this case, the chaos that comes from their unresolved feelings for each other. This is emphasized on the night Heathcliffe leaves Wuthering Heights as a furious storm.
