Suddenly, collectors went to great lengths to collect these tiny “treasures.” On one web site devoted to the toys, an avid collector said, “i hit every store through 3 little towns where i live and i go yard selling for them every weekend last week i bought a 100.00 worth of beanies at a yard sell i got bessie spooky snowball waddles 97 teddy goldie and more i hit the jackpot” (Nelson). These tiny toys serve a purpose in society. They make the collectors feel part of a “privileged few,” and raise them above those who do not have the means to spend hundreds of dollars on toys. The toys also are a glaring symbol of social inequity, when some people can afford to lavish money on toys, while others in our society do not have enough money to eat properly.
