… While bilingual education is an honorable endeavor, it is essentially a waste of much-needed school funding. There seems to be little long-term proof of the claim that bilingual education lowers dropout rates among immigrant populations. Richard Rothstein offers support for “point of instruction” bilingual education in his article “The Voters’ Prerogatives and Bilingual Education.” Citing examples from a few towns in Texas, Rothstein favors permitting “point of instruction” classes for immigrant students. Teachers in these programs attempt to assess a student’s level of comprehension in both English and Spanish before commencing standard grade-level education. The argument is that immigrant children who are exposed to bilingual education at an early age will perform better in the later grades.
Isn’t there already a shortage of funding for public schools? It is preposterous that federal monies may be devoted to more programs of questionable value. Voters in Colorado and Massachusetts have a chance to mimic the Texan initiatives and allow funding to be funnelled into useless bilingual education programs. All this is done in the name of political correctness and without due attention paid to statistics or accounting books.
