Educators must understand that Hispanic girls need positive role models and positive reinforcement. Stereotyping and discrimination by school district employees does nothing to help the problem. These individuals must adjust their attitudes toward these girls for a real change to take place. (Vives, Pg 2)
The unfortunate reality is that though Hispanics are the most rapidly growing population in the United States only a very small percentage attend college. One study indicates that only six percent of Hispanic Youth aged eighteen to twenty-four are attending college. (Bustamante, Pg 1)
There are a number of social adjustments that must be made for Hispanic women to do well in college. Social isolation, racial prejudice, and separatism all combine to make it difficult for students to completely adjust to the academic community. Many have difficulty validating their need to go on to higher education to their families, others simply have not had the academic preparation, and yet others don’t see the validity of the curriculum to their lives. (Bustamante, Pg 1)
