In both cases, Gounaud’s biases are clear. She is a Christian woman who is opposed to same-sex marriages, and there is nothing wrong with her position per se. If she had chosen to argue her position in an open and honest debate, she would even be contributing positively to what John Stuart Mill called the marketplace of free ideas, the essential component of a thriving democracy.
