Law and Justice
Law and justice mean different things to different people and cultures. What is considered illegal in one society may be wholly legal in other. In the United States, it is legal to own a firearm, while in many European countries, it isn’t. Moreover, justice may consist of completely different standards depending on the culture. In the United States, incarceration is considered justice in most cases, however, in some Middle Eastern countries, stoning is considered justice. Although, law and justice go hand in hand, they are not the same thing.
Law is complex and has many facets. The phrase, the law, simply offers a convenient way to deal with that complexity (What 3). Moreover, the law means something different from laws. The law refers to the great heritage on which the rights, benefits, and privileges of a people are based (What 3).
