… The term ‘Law’ denotes the principles and rules that governs and regulates social conduct and observance of which can be enforced through courts. According to Austin, “Law is a command of Sovereign.” In the words of Blackstone, “Law, in its most general and comprehensive sense, signifies a rule of action and is applied indiscriminately to all kinds of actions whether animate or inanimate, rational or irrational”. In the legal sense with which we are concerned in this book, the law may be defined as the system of rights and obligations which can be enforced in a Court of Law, and it includes all the rules and principles which regulate our relations with other persons and with the State.
The essential characteristics of law are: (a) Law is a body of rules and principles relating to actions of individuals, (b) Law operates to regulate the external actions of individuals in respect of one another and in respect of entire social group or society, (c) Law is applied in the administration of justice, and (d) Law is enforced by the State.
Law as a faculty has several branches. They are Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Criminal Law, Civil Law, and Commercial Law etc. …
