In William’s poem, Icarus gets mentioned first and last (Willaims, lines 2,18) but the description is not about the boy’s adventure. Auden doesn’t even mention Icarus until well into the poem (Auden line 14)and only then, he puts his name forward only as supportive of the main point, just an example, “In Breughel’s Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away.” (A,14)
While Auden discusses the event in mostly human terms, the children skating, (A, 7) the farmer ploughing (A, 15) , speaking about martyrdom, (A, 10) and is reporting on the wisdom of the masters,(A, 2) in many ways Williams’ poem is more reflective of the painting. He doesn’t give us an interpretation only images, the fall of Icarus among a list of things happening. Auden loads his description with such words as “dreadful”(A, 10) and “amazing,” (A,20) and assumes a “forsaken cry.” (A,16) Williams, on the other hand, keeps his subjective images to a minimum.
