Stealing is stealing, and Moran’s suggestion that teachers tell parents that a “child needs help in learning to respect the property of others” is almost pointless. This statement implies that the child destroys the property of others or damages it. Nothing in this statement indicates that the child steals. There are few parents who would condone their child stealing the property of others, but the parent has to know the child is stealing. The average parent would react with distress to the knowledge that his child was stealing, but he would do something about it. A child will continue to steal as long as the only correction he gets is a warning to be more careful with another child’s toys.
The euphemism for “lazy” also falls very short of communicating the child’s actual behavior. Moran suggests that the teacher tell the parent that his child “needs ample supervision in order to work well.” This statement doesn’t suggest that the child has to be …
