… In the history of the United States, there are three distinct periods of cultural experiences, those of Dominions (1490-1750), Republics (1750-1815), and Democracies (1815-1865). Each period had its own cultural paradigm, and its own organization that influenced the way in which the culture operated. Along with those paradigms, each period was ended due to specific forces or events, which led to the evolution of a new era.
The first cultural era is that of Dominions. The period lasted roughly from 1490 – 1750. At the time, the ruling paradigm was that of patriarchy. European men living in a patriarchal society, brought the idea of ownership of women and children with them when they began exploring and settling into Colonial America. In the culture transferred to the Americas, patriarchy gave the male authority over his household and of the government, rooted in his control over labor and property. This system of male dominance was not only introduced in New England but it continued to expand as the Colonies grew.
