Post War expressionists were able to couple their innermost feelings (ego) with wartime encounters to create stirring works of visual clarity into the psyche of the times. Picasso and his Cubism (a form of art showing all dimensions of a subject simultaneously) gained popularity. Henri Matisse a leader in Fauvism, (a colorful, random, intense style of painting) captured the fervent pitch of the post war world. Artists such as Piet Mondrian (abstractionist) might never have gained popularity if the world were not seen to be abstract in its very existence by the post war generation.
The impact of World War I upon the world was undeniably devastating, but from the ashes of destruction came a refreshing stream of individual thought. Spearheaded by Freud and his revolutionary theory, the World War I generation was able to take their disillusionment and mold it into a positive expression of their times in a more realistic manner than ever before.
