Certainly, it includes a considerable amount of pasta, but a Mediterranean diet also places a great deal more emphasis on fruits and vegetables like eggplant, artichokes, tomatoes and onions than we do in America. A Mediterranean diet substitutes a lot more fish for red meat (they eat red meat very rarely and in very small quantities,) includes consistent but moderate alcohol consumption and, of course, is infused with a lot of olive oil.
The scientific support for the Mediterranean diet is impressive. Everybody from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to the American Heart Association has weighed in on its merits and concluded that this type of Italian diet has considerable health benefits for the individual.
