… Magazine reports that while all Americans were affected by the events of September 11, the people that were most effected were the individuals that witnessed the attacks or lost loved ones. The article reports two different schools of thought within the psychological communitay. The first school holds the belief that these people must seek psychological help saying, “the witnessing of the horrific events on television will lead to some people’s not regaining their “psychological equanimity.” (Vatz, Weinberg) This belief is well founded because it is believed that 25% of people that witness such events develop long lasting post stress disorder syndrome.
The second school asserts that some people may not need professional help and will recover with the love and support of family and faith in a higher power. The article in USA Today Magazine reports,
“although those who feel the need to get “professional help” should seek it, there may be a self-fulfilling prophesy at work. When people are convinced that they surely are under unmanageable psychological stress, they tend to believe it and feel just that sort of stress. Moreover, many people will benefit –perhaps even more than from professional help–from support from traditional sources …
