… The last ten years of womens efforts to gain suffrage in the United States were successful partly because of new leaders like Alice Paul who developed new and more aggressive tactics for getting their points across.
What Alice Paul and others like her did was develop effective political strategies. They organized women by congressional district and even organized demonstrations, including a famous one in front of the White House. Their more visible and more strident approach appealed to younger and working-class women. Using pickets marches and other forms of active, visible protest, Paul and her cohorts changed how women fought for the right to vote.
Alice Paul spent some time in England and brought back fresh ideas from that country. Paul and her followers were frustrated by the state-by-state approach, which was slow and not terribly effective. She brought back a strategy from England, which was to actively oppose the party in power. Their goal was to force President Wilson to endorse the right of women to vote.
