… Robert Frost’s poem, “Death of a Hired Man” is a story of one family and the man, Silas, who used to work on their farm. The poem is the discussion between Warren and Mary regarding what to do with Silas since he has returned after being told not to come back. Upon hearing of Silas’ return, Warren feels anger toward him: What help he is there’s no depending on. Off he goes when I need him most. (17-8)
We learn that Warren feels this way because Silas is older than most workers are, he had a habit of laying down on the job, leaving when the most work wasn’t finished, and fighting with other workers.
Despite all of that, Mary feels pity for him as expressed when she says: Poor Silas, so concerned with other folk,
