In Anthony Burgess’ “A Clockwork Orange,” the main character, Alex, is a violent and dangerous criminal who heads up a gang. When the gang members think that Alex is trying to exert too much authority over them, they injury him and leave him at a home where they have beaten and robbed an old woman.
