… This paper investigates claims that have been made over the past decade that mandatory school uniform policies increase the safety of students at schools where those uniforms are required. School uniform policies have been widely adopted without substantive research being done either beforehand or on an ongoing basis to ascertain whether there is in fact any correlation between the wearing of uniforms and school safety. In other words, this research project seeks to fill in some of the gaps that exist between the claims made by school administrators (the group that is generally most favorably inclined towards the mandatory wearing of uniforms) and the actual effect of these uniforms on school safety.
Proponents of school uniforms argue that safety is such an important concern on school campuses that it must override all other concerns on the grounds that if students are not safe no other issues matter. Certainly in the wake of Columbine and other similarly violent incidents on school campuses school safety must be a concern for everyone.
