PORNOGRAPHY
Pornography has long been a topic of passionate debate and censorship. Aquinas and Anselm are concerned with proving Gods existence, and yet, their arguments furthermore apply to the use of pornography, for it to exist, there must be an understanding in society of what exactly is pornography. Pornography can mean different things to different people, and so it is difficult to define, and as such, even more difficult to censor. Author Berns urges censorship on a sexual act performed on stage. His conclusion is “Shame is not only natural but necessary for the proper functioning and stability of society. Without shame, individuals are unruly and unrulable” (Berns page#), and as such, shame is a necessary value in society, and shame exists when items such as pornography are too shameful to remain public. Berns maintains shame is a basic human instinct, with us from our beginnings, and so, to banish shame is to do away with something basic in our natures.
