Cory Arcangel’s interest in the world of digital arts was never innate. In fact, as an undergraduate in Oberlin he majored as an Electronic Music Composition student and his creative juices were more concentrated on making music.(Arcangel, Gygax, & Munder, 2005) In fact, even today his passion for music is still evident in his, quoting from a recent interview, “performance-slash-presentations” (PetiteMort, 2003) as some of his and his band’s music were featured for his numerous presentations on hacktivisim and its role in computer arts. He even said at one point that he’ll “do a presentation, and right in the middle of our performances I’ll be like “O.K., enough of this music, let’s talk about hacking Nintendo!” Know what I mean?”(PetiteMort, 2003) However it was his minor studies on computer science that took center stage and eventually enabled him to explore the different styles of digital art making and eventually set on becoming a renowned artist. His early collaborations with Paul B. Davis in Oberlin Conservatory for a programming ensemble in 1998 became one of the stepping stones for the development of his work.(Arcangel, 2006) Arcangel is most renowned and known for the hacking of various Nintendo game cartridge(Lichty, n.d.) and how he has reworked obsolete computer systems of the 70’s and 80’s and bring them back to mass media.
