Policing in the community – Discuss community policing and its intended impact on policing?
Community policing represents an innovation in law enforcement as well as a major opportunity for law enforcement to make the dynamic switch from responding to crimes after they occur to actually being able to prevent crime. Mythology of Crime and Criminal Justice Essay

Mythology of Crime and Criminal Justice Essay

Drug-use has negative and fatal effects both to users and the society. But the information presented in the news report in question seems to have overblown these effects.

First, the report says that marijuana today is more dangerous than how it was perceived in the 1960s and 1970s. It is not true that marijuana in the 1960s and 1970s are more dangerous than the marijuana used today. Potency data from researches in the 1980s until present show no significant increase in the THC content of marijuana. Even if it is true that there is an actual increase in the potency of the present marijuana, it would not necessarily make marijuana more dangerous because variations in THC content would still produce the same effects. (Drug Policy Alliance Network, 2009). In addition, that marijuana was perceived to be more dangerous in the 1960s and 1970s could be attributed to the fact that it was only during those times that early research on the harmful effects of marijuana was being done. People may not be as aware of these effects before as they are now, especially with all the present legislations already established that propagate the idea not only of the unlawfulness of its use but indirectly, its harmfulness. (History of Marijuana Legislation, n.d.; CoDeist2009, 2009).
