Differences Between Liberals And Conservatives in Modern American Politics

Human rights perception

Liberals seek to maximize individual liberty in the society. In accordance with the liberals’ perspective, individuals have negative and positive rights. They have the freedom from coercion which is a negative right and have the right to health care, education, and other goods and services which are considered to be good for human development. However, the liberals control the freedom which people have as they force people to obey the laws or principles they have put in place. The welfare of the society is more important than the individual. They therefore believe that things like guns should be controlled for the safety of the society (Hawkins). By taking guns from the citizens, the society will be safe and secure from criminal activities. To conservatives, individuals are more important than the society and thus have the right to protect themselves and their families. Conservatives therefore believe that guns should not be taken away from individuals. This is because people have the right to protect their lives and no law should be put in place that interferes with that right.
