Several years ago, whenever Western audiences think about India and films, Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi first comes into mind. It is, of course, a biographical movie about the non-violent life of a great spiritual leader. India was often thought of for its mastery in spiritual practices including yoga, meditation and mind control. But now, that has all changed. At least for those who have seen or heard Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire—a manic-depressive film about Mumbai street children who experience the horrors of slum life and the thrill of overcoming it. It won eight Academy Awards in 2008, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture. Naturally, it also received hundreds of commentaries or reviews from all over the world, criticizing it and praising it.
