Affirmative Action and the Struggle Between Freedom and Equality From the Perspectives of Marx and Mill

America is supposed to be a place of both freedom and equality, but throughout history, there have been serious tensions between the two. Although most of the basic civil liberties that allow Americans to actually be free (to some degree) are protected by the constitution, federal programs that strive to increase equality may limit freedom. According to the writings of Marx and Mill, tensions between freedom and equality have certain, reoccurring causes, and they have similar consequences. When people have true freedom, it is likely that equality will be limited. Affirmative Action seeks to improve equality, but it limits freedom.
