From the earliest days of colonization in North America, and particularly in the United States, American Indians have been subjected to an enormous amount of mistreatment and marginalization. Not only were they the victims of treaties that continually deprived them of land, they were also victims of those who claimed to have their best interests at heart. It is the latter group, and their efforts to ‘help’ the American Indians, that will serve as the focal point of this paper.

The Indians suffered in the hands of the American government in the 1800s. There were at times when the tribes would be seen as a separate nation which had settled in land that didn’t belong to them. At other tomes, the tribes would be threatened with termination and assimilation into the non-native society. Just as other non-American groups, the Indians were oppressed by the Americans. They were also faced by challenges such as poverty, poor health care, discrimination, poor education standards, and poor housing among many other problems. Despite the fact that today, the American Indians share good relationship with the United States government, it has not always been the case. This essay discusses some of the policies passed by the congress in the 1800s that affected the life of the American Indians.
