Romanticism is an artistic, literary, and philosophical movement that took place in Western Europe, the United States, and Latin America from around 1750 to 1870. It is viewed as a response to the cool intellectualism of the Enlightenment due to its strong emphasis on subjectivity, imagination, the idealization of nature, and the freedom of thought and expression (Williams 59). Romanticism is based on the premise that there is no such thing as an absolute truth or reality (Murray 594).
