1. The Battle of the Bulge, Dec 16, 1944:

By July 1944, most of the Germany troops were repulsed from their frontiers and out of France by a combined Allies forces led by General Bernard Montgomery, the US General Omar Bradley and the notoriously belligerent general George Patton. The allies were now convinced that Hitler was headed for a defeat as right on the Eastern side the Red Army took control of most of the territories meaning that Germany was now surrounded by heavily armed enemies. Moreover, on the Far East the US fought fiercely with the Japanese putting a huge dent on the Japanese naval capabilities. As a result, the allies grew more confident that the war was destined to an end; they grew overconfident of their plans underestimating Hitler military capabilities.
