This film was actually made in the Dominican Republic and it is a character study more than anything else. Little Sarah and mature Sarah is in her grandmother’s attic and she wants to know how she became who she is and what her definition of self should be. The tale begins with a young child running and left in a convent. This experience shows the liberation and freedom theology that the people of Haiti have used to make themselves strong and create a situation in which they can still have an identity, purpose, and strength to fight against the terrible regimes that ran the country. God would make Sarah strong and this would make it possible to be one with herself and still accept her society.
The Man by the Shore was not terribly politically dogmatic, but it hurt a lot to watch. The director made no shy statements about the pain of his people, the violence of his society, or the way that people are robbed …
