The novel entitled “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka discusses the transition of the main character, Gregor Samsa, from being human to an insect, and how his family took the sudden “metamorphosis” of Gregor. One remarkable quote from Kafka’s novel is the passage found in page 2008, wherein Gregor felt a ‘sudden’ sensation (and realization) that his legs, after he suddenly changed into an insect, are able to stand on ‘firm ground under them.’ The description of Kafka regarding Gregor’s first attempt to mobility and his satisfaction of gaining a firm stand on the ground can be understood literally and figuratively. In the literal sense, Gregor, in this passage, had felt satisfaction upon learning that his being an insect has gained him a steadier stand on the ground; figuratively, Gregor had experienced a sudden ‘freedom’ and ability to b his own self, and this is evident in his being an insect. Although he descended from being a human to an insect, it is apparent that Gregor had experienced sudden freedom with his transition, or metamorphosis.
