A very emotional story, The Red Pony documents a troubled family relationship and a young boys struggle for his own identity. Jody find his personal development very difficult because of his troubled family, but his relationship with Billy Buck makes it possible for him to feel like a valuable and important person, while his relationship with his father continues to pull him down and leave him confused and empty.
Jody maintains an emotional and caring relationship with Billy Buck. Billy wants to see him happy and wants to see offer him emotional support. Billy is also very supportive of Jodys concerns and desires and will go out of his way to help him. For example, right after Jody gets his first pony, the animal falls ill. Jody very much wants to stay with the horse while she is ill. He is worried about her and believes that staying with her will hasten her recovery. When Jody offers to stay with the animal, Billy takes his own blankets and stays wit the horse himself. …
