This study has four premises. First, Devitt theorizes that both male and female candidates for governor will receive equal amounts of press coverage. Second, female gubernatorial candidates will receive less coverage regarding their issues and campaign platforms, compared to their male counterparts. Third, the press coverage of female candidates will receive more coverage regarding their personal lives, like their attire and marital status. Finally, Devitt posits that male and female reporters themselves will cover male and female candidates differently.
Devitt studied the all news coverage the gubernatorial campaign from six daily newspapers in Arizona, Rhode Island, Colorado and Maryland from September 1, 1998 to November 3, 1998. Coders identified each paragraph that mentioned male or female candidates and classified whether the mentions counted as “issue” or “personal” coverage. They also coded the gender of the reporter.
Devitt concludes that the statistical findings support his four premises. There was no significant statistical difference between the amount of press coverage devoted to male and female candidates. However, the platforms and issues of female candidates receive less coverage than male candidates. Women candidates also received more coverage of their personal lives.
