There are two different kinds of stem cells. First, there are the pluripotent stem cells, which are derived from blastocysts, the mass of cells that occur after a fertilized egg divides. The second kinds of stem cells are the multipotent or adult stem cells, which are present in placentas, umbilical cords and bone marrow (Bevington 2002).
While there is less controversy regarding the use of adult stem cells, researchers point out that adult stem cells are much less useful for research. In addition, adult stem cells are present in only minute quantities and have yet to show the embryonic stem cells’ versatility in development. For example, adult stem cells cannot develop into cardiac stem cells or pancreatic stem cells (NIH 2000).
